We’re looking for singers

If you have experience and gifts in learning to sing four part harmony, we hope you will consider joining this wonderful opportunity to utilize music to experience the faith and spiritual journey of the first generation of Friends!
It is not necessary to have had formal choral experience to be in this choir.

However, to facilitate learning together this fairly challenging piece in the short period of time we have to rehearse it, we will be asking Friends who were not part of the choir last summer to provide confirmation of their ability to learn and perform this kind of music. This can happen via:

  • a reference letter from a choral director (emailed to firehammerfgc@gmail.com),
  • an audition via an mp3 or CD recording of you singing
  • a brief Skype audition with one of the Friends planning the event.

Read more about mp3, CD and Skype auditions.

Acceptance into the Choir

Friends should not count on being in the choir until they have been accepted.

We expect that confirmations for those who register by March 31 will be sent by April 16. After then, we expect to respond to registrations within 10 days.

You do not have to attend the FGC Gathering to participate in the Choir

Friends may choose to register for the Gathering and then come early for choir rehearsals.  Or Friends may choose to sing in the Choir and not attend the Gathering, in which case they would attend rehearsals on June 29, 30, July 1 and July 6, and the performance on July 6.

Singers will start learning the piece before arrival at the Gathering

The full choral score and a recording of previous performances will be made available to choir participants by May 1 to enable them to begin learning the work.

Mandatory rehearsals in Rhode Island, June 29-July 1, and July 6

There will be mandatory rehearsals in Kingston on the weekend prior to the FGC Gathering (the evening of Friday June 29 through Sunday afternoon, July 1). Housing will be available on URI campus for those attending the Gathering or with Friends in the area for those unable to attend the Gathering. There will be optional opportunities to rehearse further on Monday through Thursday afternoon including chances to rehearse tricky bits by part with a pianist.

There will be a final mandatory rehearsal on Friday afternoon July 6th prior to the plenary performance on Friday evening.

Read a detailed rehearsal schedule.

Choir members may not serve on Junior Gathering or High School staffs

Training for Junior Gathering and High School staffs conflicts with mandatory rehearsals for the choir. This conflicts with the Choir rehearsal on the same day.  Therefore, Friends must choose between these opportunities.

May Teens participate in the Choir and attend the FGC Gathering?

No.  Friends registered for the High School program at the Gathering may not participate in the Choir because the final rehearsals of The Fire and the Hammer on Friday afternoon July 6 conflict with key culminating activities of the High School program.

May Teens not registered for Gathering participate in the Choir?

Yes, Friends 15 years and older who are not registered for the Gathering may apply to sing in the choir.  If accepted, they must also meet these extra requirements.

  1. The Teen must have parental permission to participate in the Choir.  (Special form to be provided later.)
  2. Each Teen must have a Sponsor in the choir who is 25 years old or older.
  3. The Sponsor must be willing to be housed with the HSer.

May Choir members bring children?

We strongly encourage you not to bring your children to Kingston for rehearsals.  If bringing your child(ren) is the only way you can participate in the choir, then we can provide childcare for a limited number of children ages 3-12 for $45/child.  Please plan to have older children at home or with friends during the rehearsals. To request exceptions due to extra-ordinary circumstances, contact Conference Coordinator Traci Hjelt Sullivan gathering@fgcquaker.org.

There will be no childcare available on Friday afternoon July 6.  If you register for the Gathering, please make arrangements with friends to supervise your children during this afternoon.  If you do not register for the Gathering, please do not bring your children to campus on Friday afternoon.  Your children may attend Friday night’s performance of The Fire and the Hammer at no cost.

Costs

Although we have obtained grant funding to pay for many of the costs of the performance of the Fire and the Hammer, that funding does not include all of the costs of the rehearsal.

Housing: Friends registering for the Gathering are encouraged to reside on campus Friday and Saturday nights.  Cost is $20-$26/night depending on what kind of housing you choose.  Your pre-Gathering housing must match your during-Gathering housing.  You may also choose to bedroll on the floor of a local meetinghouse, in which case you must bring your own bedroll.

Friends not registering for the Gathering will be housed on the floor of a nearby meeting house, or in Friends' homes.

Meals:  For June 29 and 30, Friends will share the costs of simple meals.  The rehearsal site includes a kitchen.  The estimate for these meals (Friday dinner through Saturday dinner) is $20.
For July 1, no kitchen will be available.  Friends may order meals at the URI Cafeteria.  These meals must be ordered by May 31. Cost is:

  • Breakfast  $8.50
  • Lunch $12
  • Dinner$14.50

For July 6, Friends may purchase dinner on campus at the above prices.  This meal does not have to be ordered in advance.

Do not finalize your travel plans until you have been formally accepted into the Choir.

We expect that confirmations for those who register by March 31 will be sent by April 16. After then, we expect to respond to registrations within 10 days.
